Cupping Therapy

What is Cupping?

Cupping is an alternative medicine practice in which cups are placed on the skin to create a suction effect.

Unlike traditional massage, cupping creates a negative pressure, creating space between the muscle and tissue. Toxin build up situated at the bottom of the skin is brought to the surface, allowing the lymphatic system to drain impurities and stagnated blood.

Cups are most commonly placed on the neck, shoulder and back region, but can also be applied to the arms, legs, chest & abdomen.

The suction technique loosens rigid tissue and fresh blood supply/fluids can freely reach areas they were previously unable to, in turn reducing pain & tension.

Does it hurt?

Cupping should not hurt, although it can feel slightly intense to begin with depending on how much tension is in an area. After the first few minutes pass, people usually find comfort with the sensation and report a deep sense of relaxation.

People tend to feel the biggest release once the cups are taken off. Cups are usually left on anywhere between 5-10 minutes.

Are the marks bruises?

Firstly, not all cupping sessions result with a mark. If there are no toxins or stagnation, there will unlikely be marks. One theory believes the longer the marks linger, the weaker the immune system is.

Cupping marks are not bruises - bruises happen when a part of the body is injured by physical impact/force. Cupping is creating a negative pressure. Cupping marks will fade within 3-7 days.
